Statement from Speaker John A. Pérez on Assembly's Bipartisan Passage of Comprehensive Pension Reform

SACRAMENTO – Speaker John A. Pérez released the following statement upon the Assembly’s bipartisan approval of comprehensive pension reform:

“The Assembly has adopted comprehensive pension reform that exceeds the Governor’s reform proposal. Today’s actions are the culmination of a year-long process, including numerous hearings in Sacramento and across the state. We have prohibited the most objectionable practices like spiking, and have put forward measures that will save California state and local governments tens of billions of dollars in the coming years. We have done so in a manner that keeps faith with the hard working public employees who earn an average pension of $25,000 per year. This proposal addresses one of California’s most important long-term challenges. I am proud of my colleagues for tackling this difficult issue, and I want to particularly recognize Assemblymember Warren Furutani, who co-Chaired the Conference Committee, and Assemblymember Michael Allen, who serves as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Public Employees, Retirement and Social Security, for their thoughtful and dedicated efforts in passing these crucial reforms.”
