Assembly Higher Education Chair Marty Block’s statement on Governor’s State of the State Address Featured

SACRAMENTO, CA--Assembly Higher Education Committee Chair Marty Block (AD-78) issued the following statement on Governor Jerry Brown’s State of the State Address:

“Today, Governor Jerry Brown delivered a State of the State Address that was filled with hope and optimism for the future of California.

“In pointing out the state’s many accomplishments, the Governor rightfully described California as the “land of dreams.” It is also the land of creativity and innovation. I was pleased to hear the Governor use Qualcomm as an example. Qualcomm is a worldwide, San Diego-born company that employs approximately 12,000 people in San Diego County and continues to grow each year. Qualcomm, like many companies in San Diego’s high-tech and bio-tech sectors, relies upon our regions K-12 and higher education institutions to provide a well-educated workforce.

“As we vow to invest in innovation, we must invest in public education as well.  The Governor’s plan to eliminate some redundant tests in K-12 and to increase and broaden instruction is long overdue. Removing the “teach to the test” mindset will result in better preparing kids to be successful in college and competitive in the job market. We need to continue to hold those working closest with the students accountable while providing them with evaluations and results in a timely, efficient manner.

“California can’t move forward without new revenue streams and come November, it will be up to the voters to decide whether our state will remain stagnant and absorb more cuts to vital programs and services or grow with the hope and optimism our Governor displayed today.”
