Sacramento – Today, Assembly Bill 1376 authored by Assemblymember Roger Hernández passed the Assembly Insurance Committee on a unanimous 13-0 vote. This bill allows the California Department of Human Resources to maintain and publish the list of certified administrative hearing and medical examination interpreters, and provides processes to qualify provisional interpreters.
“This common-sense bill ensures individuals who speak little or no English have access to qualified medical interpreters when they need them most” said Hernández.
Hanford, CA –This afternoon Assemblymember Roger Hernández stood outside the offices of Marquez Brothers Inc. to announce the formal investigation by the Committee on Labor and Employment, which he chairs, on the recent firing of a Marquez Brother’s Inc. Employee.
On March 6, 2013 Assemblymember Hernández held an oversight hearing to examine the unlawful labor practices of employers in California. In particular, the practices often utilized to intimidate undocumented workers. A witness who participated at the hearing was recently terminated by Marquez Brothers in retaliation for her attendance at the hearing.
Moves Next to Committee on Transportation
SACRAMENTO — Today, Assemblymember Roger Hernández (D-West Covina) presented in the Assembly Judiciary Committee Assembly Bill 35, a measure that helps integrate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) youth into our economy. AB 35 helps integrate these youth by extending consumer protections against fraudulent and unlawful practices from people attempting to provide them services for a fee. Unlike the current Naturalization process, this bill specifically delineates who can provide DACA services for a fee, and prohibits price gouging from attorneys, immigration consultants and notary publics.
“I am focused on restoring California’s strong economy and global competitive edge. As such, we cannot afford to turn our backs on our young immigrant students, especially those who have proven success in their academic and employment achievements,” said Hernández.
West Covina USD and Glendora USD tie for fourth
SACRAMENTO — Assemblymember Roger Hernández (D – West Covina) applauds the achievements of Baldwin Park Unified School District. Students from Baldwin Park Unified posted five-year gains of 102 API points; this exceeded the average gains of 64 points by any other large school district in California, earning the district the top spot in the Ed Trust-West 2012 District Report Cards grading.
“This demonstrates that school districts in the 48th Assembly District are working diligently to prepare our students for a better future. Parents and educators are clearly working together to close achievement gaps, providing students greater opportunities for success,” said Hernández.
AB 667 Moves to Committee on Local Government
Sacramento - Assemblymember Roger Hernandez (D – West Covina) recently introduced AB 667, which would require an economic impact report outlining the potential economic impacts caused to the local communities by large developments commonly known as 'big box' or 'superstores.'
"I am a strong advocate for the business community and as such, I want our growing economy to continue on a path of creating good quality paying jobs for the hard working families of this state. We want California to continue this positive trend in adding new jobs to our economy, but we need to make sure that we are not hurting smaller businesses along the way. This bill will ensure the small business community is protected especially in regions deemed as economic assistance areas," stated Hernández.
AB 166 moves next to the Committee on Appropriations
Sacramento, CA - The Assembly Education Committee on bi-partisan support approved AB 166 authored by Assemblymember Roger Hernández (D-West Covina). The bill would improve financial literacy instruction in high schools statewide.
"The growing negative effects of financial illiteracy, such as the housing mortgage crisis and a low national savings rate, have spurred the need for financial literacy education. As of now, California does not have an official state policy or educational plan for the teaching of financial literacy," said Hernández.
SACRAMENTO — Assemblymember Roger Hernandez (D – West Covina) along with the California Labor Federation and a coalition of Immigrant Rights Groups joined together today at a Press Conference to call for stronger labor protections for immigrant workers in the state. They also called for a Comprehensive Immigration Reform package that would include labor protections.
The Press Conference was called after a report from the National Employment Law Project (NELP) was released late last month. The NELP Report, Workers' Rights on ICE: How Immigration Reform Can Stop Retaliation and Advance Labor Rights – California Report, finds that portions of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform as discussed by President Obama should not only include a direct path to citizenship, but must include workers protections to low-wage immigrant workers, caregivers and day laborers.
Hernandez Schedules March 6 Hearing on Immigrant Workers’ Rights and Conditions
Sacramento - Assemblymember Roger Hernandez (D – West Covina) along with the California Labor Federation and a coalition of Immigrant Rights Groups joined together today in strong support for the recently released report entitled Workers' Rights on ICE: How Immigration Reform Can Stop Retaliation and Advance Labor Rights by the National Employment Law Project (NELP).
The NELP Report finds that portions of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform as discussed by President Obama should not only include a direct path to citizenship, but must include workers protections to low-wage immigrant workers, caregivers and day laborers. The NELP works to restore economic opportunities for all in the 21st century.
SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Roger Hernandez released the following statement on the President's State of the Union Address:
"I welcome President Obama's enthusiasm and energy in creating new jobs in our nation. Jobs that will provide new opportunities for tomorrows generations, but most importantly: to keep California moving forward.
I applaud his efforts in bringing the new revolution of manufacturing jobs in this country, which will provide a prosperous economy and endless opportunities for many of our residents here in this state. Further, raising the federal minimum wage to $9.00 an hour will instill trust and confidence in the eyes of millions of hard-working families. It is also imperative we recognize the importance of addressing comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship, the expansion of our workforce, as well as workers protections so that our economy can prosper and employ individuals who will be contributing to our state's General Fund.
As Chair of the Committee of Labor and Employment, I look forward in working with my colleagues in the Legislature to ensure the President's priorities have the support to put Californians back to work."
