(SACRAMENTO)— Today, Assemblymember Luis A. Alejo (D-Salinas) introduced AB 1543 Made in the USA for public contracts.
“Last night our President asked, ‘What can you do to bring jobs back to your country?’” said Alejo. “Each state was challenged and I’m answering the call to action. Today, I introduced AB 1543 Made in the USA for public contracts.”
“I agree with our President that we have an opportunity to bring manufacturing back to America,” stated Alejo. “California’s tax dollars should pay for goods and services provided by hard working Americans, not workers overseas. AB 1543 applies the California Buy American Act to public contracts.”
Specifically, this bill would require the State of California and all local government entities to purchase or lease manufactured tangible personal property, or materials or structural components to be incorporated into real property, only if they are manufactured in the United States. These manufactured items would also have to be made substantially from materials produced in the United States.
“We have a workforce ready and eager to work,” continued Alejo. “Spending tax dollars here instead of overseas creates a multiplier effect, eventually putting more and more people back to work.”
“President Obama said it was time to bring jobs back home. I couldn’t agree more,” Alejo said.
Luis Alejo represents the 28th District in the California State Assembly, which consists of San Benito County, the Salinas Valley, North Monterey County, South Santa Clara County and the city of Watsonville.
