(SACRAMENTO)— Assemblymember Luis A. Alejo (D-Salinas) is calling on Governor Brown to reconsider eliminating funding for Home-To-School Transportation.
A letter, signed by a bipartisan, bicameral group of 12 legislators from across the state, criticizes the Department of Finance’s decision to implement these cuts when the budget triggers were pulled last week.
It acknowledges the “difficult and painful” budget situation, but contends the decision “disproportionately affects low-income and rural students throughout California.” The $248 million cut will especially hurt children in areas without safe sidewalks or alternative public transportation options.
The Department of Finance has flexibility in determining where to apply the trigger cuts, and the letter urges the Department to find a “more equitable and fair” solution.
Luis Alejo represents the 28th District in the California State Assembly, which consists of San Benito County, the Salinas Valley, North Monterey County, South Santa Clara County and the city of Watsonville.
