A bill that would make it illegal to buy or sell shark fins in California moved a step closer to becoming law today. The bill unanimously moved out of a state Assembly committee. Some critics say the proposal amounts to a cultural assault because shark's fin soup is prized in traditional Chinese banquets. But the bill's sponsor, Silicon Valley Assemblymember Paul Fong, says that's not true.
