(Concord, CA) – Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla will be hosting her third annual soccer clinic for girls this Saturday, August 3, at Tesoro Soccer Fields in Concord. The theme of this year’s soccer clinic is, “Taking the World by Storm: Building Self-Confidence and Leadership Skills for Girls On & Off the Field.” This fun and exciting free soccer clinic for girls ages 9-18 will be led by members of the women’s semi-professional soccer team, the California Storm.
Close to 200 girls from across the East Bay have pre-registered for this year’s soccer clinic. The goal of the soccer clinic is to help promote confidence and leadership in young girls while having a great workout with some outstanding role models.
“I am excited to once again partner with the California Storm women’s soccer team to support the dreams and efforts of young athletes in the East Bay,” said Assemblywoman Bonilla. “For three years, the Taking the World by Storm Soccer Clinic has been a unique event that gives young girls the opportunity to interact and learn from talented female athletes. The clinic is not just about soccer, but it also allows participants to learn valuable life skills such as leadership, determination and teamwork. As a mother of four daughters who were all active in sports, I can attest to the essential role that sports can play in developing girls into strong, confident women.”
“We are thrilled about having our third soccer clinic with Assemblywoman Bonilla,” said Jerry Zanelli, Head Coach and Owner of the California Storm. “We’re happy to be able to provide an opportunity for these young ladies to participate and develop their soccer skills.”
“Tesoro is excited to partner with Assemblywoman Bonilla and the Storm in hosting a free soccer clinic for young women in our community,” said Steve Hansen, Vice-President and Tesoro Golden Eagle Refinery Manager. “We see this as an opportunity to use our Tesoro soccer fields to support a new generation of leaders, promote a healthy life style, and give back to our community.”
“Wells Fargo is proud to support Assemblywoman Bonilla in her third annual soccer clinic for young women,” said Bob Ceglio, Mount Diablo President for Wells Fargo. “Education, self-confidence and leadership skills are more important than ever for our children to have greater career opportunities. Through this soccer clinic, the girls in our community will get valuable insights and life skills.”
“PG&E is proud to once again support Assemblywoman Bonilla’s soccer clinic, which provides a firm foundation for girls and young women both on and off the soccer field,” said Ed Bedwell, Vice President of Government Affairs for Pacific Gas & Electric Company. “The clinic helps to build girls’ playing skills, as well as their character, by instilling the values of collaboration and perseverance. We are pleased to be a part of the communities in which our customers and employees live, work and play.”
“Garaventa Enterprises would like to thank Assemblywoman Bonilla for allowing us to be part of such a wonderful event,” said Joe Garaventa, CEO of Garaventa Enterprises. “Soccer is a great sport that encourages many lifelong skills such as teamwork, communication and sportsmanship. We are confident the event will be a great success!”
“SportStars Magazine is proud to be the Official Media Sponsor of Assemblywoman Bonilla’s soccer clinic,” said Mike Calamusa, Publisher, SportStars Media. “This event has inspired hundreds of girls who compete in local youth soccer leagues across the East Bay community. It’s a fantastic outreach which endeavors to support and encourage young athletes - fitting nicely as one of SportStars primary initiatives.”
The Taking the World by Storm Soccer Clinic will give girls the opportunity to meet and workout with top notch soccer players who have competed at the highest level. Many California Storm players have gone on to play on the US Olympic and World Champion National teams. Some of the greatest players in the world have also played for the Storm like Alex Morgan, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, and many collegiate all-stars. Ten former players from the Storm have moved up to play professionally for the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league. New this year on the Storm roster is Elizabeth Cudjoe, a member of the Ghana national soccer team and standout player during the U-20 FIFA World Cup tournament.
Opening this year’s soccer clinic will be singer Brianna Oakley of Antioch CA, an American Idol contestant from the hit show’s 12th season, who will be performing our National Anthem.
