Assemblymember Ammiano's Domestic Workers Bill of Rights
Sacramento - The award winning movie “The Help” is not only a tale of days gone by it’s also the story of today’s domestic workers. Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) has introduced Assembly Bill 889 to protect the rights of California's domestic workers. Labor leaders AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski are in full support of the measure. Making Higher Education Affordable Again
(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) is joining with Asssembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) in a bold, new effort to make college more affordable for middle class students and their families. Assemblymember Ammiano is a co-author with Speaker Pérez of the Middle Class Scholarship Act (www.MiddleClassScholarship.com), which would cut the cost of attending a CSU or UC by two-thirds and dramatically reduce the cost of attending a California community college for any qualifying student whose family income is below $150,000. The program would be paid for by closing a tax loophole that only benefits out-of-state corporations. Assemblymember Ammiano says the program is practical and visionary. Assemblymember Ammiano Lobbies for Bay Area, State
(Washington DC) – A bipartisan delegation of 20 Assemblymembers, including Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles), recently went to Washington, D.C. to press key Congressional and Administration officials on budgetary and policy issues critical to California. Assemblymember Ammiano says California contributes a great deal to the nation and it’s crucial the state receive as much federal stimulus funding as possible. Assemblymember Ammiano says he lobbied personally for money for Bay Area projects, like the Golden Gate Bridge suicide deterrent and he says the delegation also worked to secure $1 billion in increased federal funding for health care related costs; lobbied for federal funds for California’s high-speed-rail system; sought funding for drought relief and pushed for more federal support for California’s green economy programs. Spending Cuts May Endanger Californians, Cost State More Later
Sacramento - The Budget Conference Committee is continuing to meet daily at the state capitol, searching for ways to reduce Californias massive budget deficit. However, some of the program eliminations and reductions proposed in the Governors revised budget will endanger the lives of the most vulnerable people in the state and will likely end up costing the state more in the long run by pushing those affected by the budget cuts into more expensive programs and the loss of matching federal dollars. Assembly Democrats believe smarter, more responsible budget solutions are needed.
