Governor Schwarzenegger is deciding the fate of bills sent to his desk soon including two of my bills, AB 1659 and AB 2130. These bills will require the Legislature to review state entities to determine if the agency is still necessary, should be reorganized or eliminated.
As you know, Sunset Review has been an integral part of my quest to reform government and bring more accountability to taxpayers on how the government spends their money.
Other states have realized long term savings by implementing similar review processes. In Texas, for example, its Sunset Advisory Commission has abolished 58 agencies and consolidated another 12 agencies. Total savings achieved by the Commission equals roughly 5% of the state's budget – in California 5% is $4 billion.
In a June 2009 address to the Legislature the Governor said, “every dollar we save from those boards and commissions is a dollar that can be used to help our most vulnerable citizens.” These bills ensure the basic questions or effectiveness and efficiency are being asked so that money is not being wasted.
I encourage you to tell the Governor to sign AB 1659 and AB 2130.
