Assemblymember Huffman presents his April Sustainable
North Bay Award to Bill Daniels, owner of United Markets.
On April 26, 2012, Assemblymember Jared Huffman presented his April Sustainable North Bay Award to United Markets in recognition of their commitment to conservation, sustainable business practices, and community service.
Serving Marin for over 50 years with stores in downtown San Rafael and San Anselmo, United Markets’ achievements include waste diversion, supporting local farmers and food producers, voluntarily ceasing sales of tobacco products as well as plastic bags, carrying environmentally friendly products, and supporting community service projects.
United Markets also makes a significant contribution to the community through its shopping club card program that dedicates three percent of cardholder purchases to benefit over 70 Marin schools.

On March 16, 2012, Assemblymember Jared Huffman presented his March Sustainable North Bay Award to Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary in recognition of the company’s environmentally responsible business practices and consumer products.
Located in the Sonoma County community of Freestone, Osmosis incorporates sustainability throughout their spa including recycling, composting, onsite vermiculture, reduced water and energy usage, and environmentally friendly products throughout the spa. Personal health, longevity, and planetary sustainability all connect in the spa experience at Osmosis.
“I am very impressed with the steps that Osmosis has taken to conserve energy and cut down on its carbon footprint,” said Huffman. “It should be commended for leading the green revolution within the health spa industry.”
Huffman toured the Osmosis grounds and presented the March Sustainable North Bay Award to Michael Stusser, owner; Melena Moore, marketing manager; Lauren Santibanez, service provider manager; and Kirtis Johnson, general manager.
“At Osmosis we believe that personal well-being and planetary wellness are intimately connected,” said Stusser. “The global imperative for sustainability goes hand in hand with the pursuit of a vital lifestyle. We have worked hard to pioneer an authentic green spa experience and appreciate being recognized for our efforts by Jared Huffman.”
Osmosis, a Sonoma County Certified Green Business, is proud to be a founding member of the Green Spa Network, a non-profit trade organization dedicated to bringing sustainability practices to the spa industry. Founded in 1985, Osmosis is committed to community service, environmental awareness, and the principles of social responsibility. The spa supports local non-profit organizations including Sutter Breast Care Center, West County Health Centers, Steward of the Coast and Redwoods, Ceres Community project, and the Redwood Arts Council.

On February 28, 2012, Assemblymember Jared Huffman presented his February Sustainable North Bay Award to Clough Construction in recognition of the company’s environmentally responsible business practices. Founded in 1987, Clough Construction is a custom deck and fencing company based in San Rafael that prides itself on using sustainable construction materials and design in its projects. On January 27, 2012, Assemblymember Huffman presented his January Sustainable North Bay Award to Brayton Purcell LLP of Novato in recognition of the partnership's environmental business practices and community service. The firm has demonstrated this commitment to conservation and sustainability by progressively introducing business practices in their facility to reduce its carbon footprint. Some of these green improvements include rooftop solar arrays, extensive paper and E-waste recycling methods, energy-efficient lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and reduced landscaping irrigation. Brayton Purcell also gives back to the community through its extensive philanthropy. It is a strong supporter of local charities like the Bay Institute, Legal Aid of Marin, Marin Humane Society, Novato Human Needs Center, and the North Bay Children's Center.
