Students Deserve Equal Access to Education
Sacramento - Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today announced his co-authorship of Assembly Bill 1448 (Furutani), which restores home-to-school transportation funding for California students.
Recent mid-year budget cuts by Governor Jerry Brown eliminated $248 million in school bus transportation funds, which affects an estimated one million students in California.
Among the schools in Assemblymember Huffman’s district affected by these cuts, Petaluma City Schools is estimated to lose over half a million dollars in funding towards school transportation. Another example, Bellevue Union Schools is losing over $223,000 in funding for home-to-school and special education transportation funding.
"These cuts to school busses disproportionately affect special needs, low-income and rural students throughout California," said Assemblymember Huffman. "We have a responsibility to ensure that all students have equal access to education. AB 1448 will help redirect funds to this necessary program."
AB 1448 has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Education. It will be heard later this session.
Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) represents the 6th Assembly District, which encompasses southern Sonoma County and all of Marin County. First elected in 2006, Huffman chairs the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee and also serves as Co-Chair of the Legislative Environmental Caucus.
