California's Fisheries

California's Fisheries

Fishing is America's oldest industry. In California, fish and seafood have been an important part of the local diet for more than 10,000 years. Fisheries remain a significant part of our state's history, culture and economy. As chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture, it is my job to put on the annual Fisheries Forum. The Fisheries Forum is unique to all other types of hearings held in Sacramento and, I believe, is unique to the nation. It is a special hearing set aside one day each year to bring together fishing men and women, including tribal members, fishery scientists, conservationists and agencies to discuss the pressing issues facing our fish and fisheries. It allows us to get together with so many old friends. This year the 38th Annual Forum was held at the Capitol in February, and was a great success. On these pages we have compiled a collection of resources that I hope will inform and inspire you to become involved in the quest to protect this precious California resource.
